The “Don’t Tread On Me” flag, also known as the Gadsden flag, was designed in 1775 by Christopher Gadsden during the American Revolutionary War. The depicted rattlesnake is a satirical comment made by Gadsden in reference to the suggestion by Benjamin Franklin that they should send rattlesnakes back to Britain in return for all the convicted criminals that Britain was sending to America.
