• Pasteur was born on December 27, 1822 in Dole, France.

• Pasteur invented the pasteurization process which is used to treat milk and beer and is now applied across the world.

• Through his experiments Pasteur proved that germs (i.e. bacteria) were living things that came from other living things.

• The first vaccine discovered by Pasteur was for a disease named chicken cholera, in 1879.

• The term “vaccination” was coined by Louis Pasteur. He invented the rabies vaccine.

• Pasteur researched and invented vaccines for cholera, diphtheria, plague, rabies, yellow fever, tuberculosis and anthrax.

• He named the new science bacteriology.

• Louis was given the Leeuwenhoek medal, the highest honor in microbiology.

• He founded the Paris Pasteur institute in 1887. The Pasteur Institute is one of the world leaders in battling infectious diseases.

• Craters on Mars and the Moon are named in his honor.

• Louis Pasteur died in 1895 from a stroke. He was buried in the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, France.

• A biographical film of his life has also been made, entitled The Story of Louis Pasteur.
